The New York Yankees recently lost Devin Williams to a three-year deal with the New York Mets, and could be looking for relievers in free agency.

Williams was a two-time All-Star with the Milwaukee Brewers before a terrible season with the Yankees. He is a bounce-back candidate, and the Mets may suddenly be less inclined to pay Edwin Díaz. The Athletic’s Jim Bowden wants to see the Yankees sign Díaz to a five-year, $88 million deal with escalators that could take the deal to $100 million.

“The Subway Series gets a new twist, as the New York teams swap closers,” Bowden wrote of the Yankees signing Díaz. “The Yankees take a risk with a five-year deal for a reliever but the immediate boost to the back end of their bullpen will be significant.”

Díaz was named the National League Reliever of the Year last season. It was his third Reliever of the Year Award, but the Mets may not be willing to pay him what he wants this offseason. With Williams now on the roster, he could take over as the closer.

David Stearns has seen firsthand, during his time with the Brewers, what Williams is capable of. If the Mets feel that he can be a dominant closer once again, they could let Díaz walk. Meanwhile, the Yankees would get Díaz to close games, allowing David Bednar to be his setup man.

Aaron Boone would essentially have three closers in his bullpen between Díaz, Bednar and Camilo Doval. The trio could form one of the best winning bullpens in baseball.
