GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) – Summer baseball may return to the Grand Valley after the departure of the Grand Junction Jackalopes, with a new team and league reportedly exploring making the Western Slope and Suplizio Field their home.
According to Pecos League Officials, the league, and the City of Grand Junction are in early stages of exploring potentially bringing a team to Grand Junction.
The league is an independent league which operates in several states, including Colorado with the Trinidad Triggers, and has teams in other states including Arizona, California, , Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.
The league features teams with colorful names like the Roswell Invaders, Bakersfield Train Robbers and Dublin Leprechauns. The league also has about a half dozen alumni who went on to make appearances in the major leagues.
League officials said the team would use Suplizio Stadium beginning in early June, following the JUCO World Series, and end in late July before it becomes a conflict with Colorado Mesa or high school football. This was a previous concern sited by the Pioneer League and Grand Junction Jackalopes.
The City of Grand Junction provided a statement saying, “With the Jackalopes’ departure from the Lincoln Park Sports Complex, the City has issued a request for proposals to bring a new summer attraction to the facility. The City is now reviewing submissions, conducting interviews, and looks forward to updating the community as soon as more information is available.”
The league said there is no definitive name at this time. The league and the city have discussed a potential team name vote. However, there is already a merchandise page available for a team called the Grand Junction Cliff Hangers with what appears to be a red, black and orange color scheme. League officials said that is not an official name at this time.
