Former Toronto Blue Jays pitcher named new bullpen coach for San Francisco Giants

The longtime MLB journeyman, who retired in July after 18 big league seasons, is joining the San Francisco Giants as bullpen coach, under new manager Tony Vitiello.Chavez’ role as coach was revealed to reporters by recently-signed reliever Sam Hentges
The Giants are hiring Jesse Chavez as their bullpen coach, per multiple reports
Chavez played for nine teams during the course of his career, including two separate stints for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2012 and 2016.His most notable home however, was with the Atlanta Braves. After getting traded to the club in 2009, early on in his career, he returned in 2021. He wound up back there in 2022 and then again in 2025.Chavez was a popular on the transaction wire this part season as he was continuously designated for assignment by Atlanta, only to be re-signed the following day.
However, after being DFA’d by the club for the third time in mid-July, he decided to call it a career.
Now, he is returning to his home state for his first coaching role, just months after his retirement as a player.
In his two seasons with the Blue Jays, Chavez was 2-3 with a 5.89 ERA in 48 games, including two starts.
Chavez joins other former big leaguers in new-look Giants
Chavez wasn’t the only former big leaguer hired by the Giants. Pitcher Javier Lopez and catcher Curt Casali both recently joined the team as front office advisors.
In addition to his DFA fame, Chavez is also notable for being the most traded player in MLB history, having being dealt 11 times.
