Starting pitching is a constant need for teams across the league in the offseason, and this year is no different.
MLB has already seen some massive moves this offseason, with Dylan Cease signing a $210 million deal with the Toronto Blue Jays and the Los Angeles Angels making a blockbuster trade for Grayson Rodriguez from the Baltimore Orioles. Another name surely to be in the mix this season is the Washington Nationals’ MacKenzie Gore, per ESPN’s Buster Olney.
“Execs report a ton of trade talk going on right now, with some front office types saying teams are more open, more willing than in recent years to discuss a range of players,” Olney reported via X (formerly Twitter). “There is a perception in a couple of front offices that the Nats’ Mackenzie Gore will definitely be among those moved in the days ahead.”

Gore had a hot start to the season, posting a 3.02 ERA up to the All-Star break, but limped through the second half of 2025, ending the year with a 4.17 ERA. Despite his shortcomings in the latter half of the season, Gore recorded a career-high 185 strikeouts and made 25 or more starts for the third season running.

The Nationals finished dead last in the NL East in 2025, and a rebuild around key players like James Wood and C.J. Abrams could very well be in place. With that in mind, Bleacher Report’s Erik Beaston predicts the All-Star could land with the Orioles or the New York Mets this offseason.
“A young thrower with good stuff, he played for a bad Washington team that is likely headed toward (another) rebuild and could utilize their best pitcher to garner more draft picks and expedite the process,” Beaston wrote.
“The New York Mets and Baltimore Orioles, two teams well known to be looking for starters, are worth watching in regards to the pitcher.”

The Orioles and Mets finished 24th and 18th, respectively, in starter ERA in 2025, and neither placed well among the rest of the league in strikeout percentage either. With each coming off a disappointing season in their own regard, the addition of an All-Star-caliber piece like Gore would be a huge boost to both teams in their extremely competitive divisions.
