Former New York Mets All-Star Pete Alonso remains one of the biggest names in free agency with rumors of a potential return to Queens in the offseason.
While the Mets are rumored to be interested in bringing back their franchise star for another stint, The Boston Globe‘s Pete Abraham reported that the Boston Red Sox are “high” on Alonso’s list of potential destinations this offseason.
The Red Sox have been linked with a move for Alonso, along with Kyle Tucker and Kyle Schwarber, as the AL East franchise is looking to add hitting power to the middle order.

However, a potential deal for Alonso hinges on his contract demands. Alonso’s camp sought a deal around $100 million last offseason and is reportedly looking for a similar valuation in his free agency. Despite a strong 2025 season, ESPN and the Athletic predicted a four- or five-year deal worth nearly $30 million per year.
Meanwhile, the Toronto Blue Jays are strongly linked with a move for another high-profile free agent, Kyle Tucker. The Jays signed Dylan Cease to a blockbuster deal last month and have turned their attention to the hitting order.
According to the latest rumors, the World Series runner-ups are finalizing a multi-year deal with an estimated $22 million AAV. Tucker’s signing will be a big boost for the AL East franchise, who have a hole to fill after Bo Bichette became a free agent at the end of the season.
Red Sox’s pursuit of Alex Bregman takes a major hit from AL franchise
The Red Sox’s pursuit of Pete Alonso has seemingly intensified after reports emerged that All-Star infielder Alex Bregman was close to a move to the Detroit Tigers in free agency.
Bregman, who opted out of his Red Sox contract at the end of the season, has been linked with a return to the team in free agency. However, The Athletic’s Jim Bowden predicted that the All-Star third baseman could be on the move to Boston’s AL rivals, the Detroit Tigers.
According to Bowden, the Tigers are preparing a six-year, $182 million deal for Bregman.
