May 1, 1989Cardinals make AAA state playoffs

The ability to get an early lead and hold it typified Robertson Cardinal play during the 1989 baseball season. But Saturday afternoon they showed they could come from behind, and in a big way.

1989 Baseball Robertson

Robertson’s Manny Garcia reaches back to fire a fastball to home plate.

Six was the magic number. Robertson scored six runs in the sixth inning to down Silver City 7-4 in one of two weekend Class AAA pre-playoff games. Belen got by Kirtland Central 4-2 in the other playoff. The 18-5 District 2AAA runner-up Cards meet St. Pius in first round state tournament action in Bloomfield Thursday night at 5. Other first round games include District 2AAA champion Raton at 5AAA runner-up Belen in the opener at 9 a.m., 3AAA champ Deming against 4AAA runner-up Artesia at 11:30 a.m. and 4AAA titleholder Roswell Goddard against 1AAA champ and host Bloomfield in the 7:30 nightcap.

For five innings the Cardinals battled a bitterly cold wind and Silver City pitcher Ceasar Gutierrez.

Gutierrez breezed along on a five-hitter and a 4-1 until Robertson sent 1- batter to the plate in the sixth. The Cards scored six runs to blow Gutierrez away and allow Manny Garcia to sail away with the win.
