The Philadelphia Phillies have more pressure on them than most teams do this offseason. Dave Dombrowski knows he has to retool the roster, but there are a few players he would like to bring back from the group that lost in the National League Division Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
One of those players is Kyle Schwarber, who has hit 50-or-more home runs in Philadelphia in his last two seasons with the organization. If there is any one of their free agents that is the biggest priority, Schwarber is definitely the one they want to bring back.
With the winter meetings set to begin Sunday, Kerry Miller believes the Phillies will get the deal done in Orlando.

“With each passing day that the deal doesn’t get announced, it becomes a little more realistic that he could end up somewhere else,” Miller wrote for Bleacher Report. “As such, that’s enough playing around. After feeling out his market for a day at the Winter Meetings, the Phillies will give Schwarber either a four-year or five-year deal at around $30M per year and will spend the rest of the winter figuring out more budget-friendly solutions at catcher, outfield and bullpen.
The Phillies would be grateful to get Schwarber back on this deal as the organization has taken longer to re-sign him than most Phillies fans would prefer. However, all would be forgiven as long as Dombrowski keeps him around.
This deal is reasonable for both sides as it would keep one of the best hitters in baseball in Philadelphia while still giving the team some flexibility to address other areas of the roster that need to be filled or upgraded. However, Miller notes that the Phillies can’t leave him as a free agent for much longer.
“They moved quickly to re-sign Aaron Nola two winters ago, and it’s a little surprising they didn’t do the same with Schwarber,” he added. “With each passing day that the deal doesn’t get announced, it becomes a little more realistic that he could end up somewhere else.”
Dombrowski should move quickly with Schwarber and even if a deal isn’t finalized by the end of the winter meetings, reasonable progress is to be expected.
