Trade discussions surrounding Marte aren’t new. Before the trade deadline last season, reports surfaced that the Diamondbacks were considering moving the All-Star infielder. While no deal materialized then, a trade remains possible given the team’s current needs.

Arizona is seeking pitching help, a first-base replacement and additional offense to stay competitive. The club also has limited resources. Moving Marte’s contract would provide financial relief and the flexibility to add younger, needed talent.

According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, the following teams are actively pursuing Marte: the Boston Red Sox, Seattle Mariners, Pittsburgh Pirates, Tampa Bay Rays, Detroit Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays.

Any deal for Marte would require a significant return, but that doesn’t rule out the possibility. ESPN’s Jeff Passan has projected a 40% chance the Diamondbacks will ultimately trade the All-Star. Still, Arizona would need a substantial package to make it worthwhile.

Marte’s value is at an all-time high, and with his 10-and-5 rights set to take effect in April, the Diamondbacks will soon have to decide whether now is the right moment to cash in or keep him through the remainder of his extension.
