TORONTO — Daulton Varsho hit a grand slam in a seven-run eighth inning and the Toronto Blue Jays routed the San Die-go Padres, 14-0, on Wednesday (Thursday in Manila).

Nathan Lukes’ two-run homer gave Toronto the lead in the fifth before the Blue Jays racked up 12 runs in the seventh and eighth. Bo Bichette drove in a run with a fielder’s choice in the seventh and added an RBI single in the eighth.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and George Springer each had an RBI single before pinch-hitter Jonatan Clase added a two-run double in the five-run seventh. Addison Barger drove in a run with a double and Ernie Clement had an RBI single.

Kevin Gausman (4-4) struck out nine and gave up just three hits over seven. Reliever Jose Urena finished the game.

Luis Arraez had a double and a triple as San Diego lost its fifth straight.

Randy Vasquez (3-4) allowed two runs on four hits, striking out four over 4 2/3 innings.

Jeremiah Estrada, Adrian Morejon and Alek Jacob came out of the Padres bullpen, with Morejon giving up four unearned runs and Jacob allowing six, five of those earned. Center fielder Tyler Wade started pitching with one out in the eighth to spare San Diego’s arms.

Cubs 2, Marlins 1

In Miami, Kyle Tucker had a homer among his three hits and knocked in the tiebreaking run with a single and fielding error by Miami in the eighth inning as the Chicago Cubs beat the Marlins.

The NL Central-leading Cubs took two games of the three-game set against Miami after a walk-off loss on Monday and have won seven of their last nine games.

Chicago rookie Matt Shaw drew a leadoff walk against Marlins reliever Anthony Bender (1-3) in the eighth and stole sec-ond. Tucker’s second single advanced Shaw, who then sprinted home with the eventual game-winning run when Marlins left-fielder Kyle Stowers overran the ball.

Brad Keller (1-0) threw 1 1/3 innings of relief and earned his first win since 2023. Daniel Palencia worked a perfect ninth for his first save.

For the second consecutive day, Tucker gave the Cubs a first inning lead with a solo homer. Tucker sent a slider from Marlins starter Max Meyer 385 feet over the wall in right for his 12th homer.

The Marlins tied it in the bottom half on Connor Norby’s RBI infield single.

Meyer allowed one run and five hits over six innings with a walk and four strikeouts.

Making his second major league start, Cubs right-hander Cade Horton threw 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball. He allowed six hits, walked three and struck out three.

Phillies 9, Rockies 5

In Denver, J.T. Realmuto, Trea Turner and Bryce Harper hit home runs and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Colorado Rock-ies for their sixth straight victory.

The NL East-leading Phillies (31-18) have outscored Colorado, 25-12, through the first three games of the four-game series. The woeful Rockies are 8-41 after losing their fourth in a row and 16th in their last 18.

Realmuto had three hits, including his fifth homer this season, and three RBIs. Harper hit his eighth homer and finished with two hits after a three-hit game Tuesday. Turner’s homer was his third and he had two hits as did Nick Castellanos.

Philadelphia’s Taijuan Walker (2-3) pitched five innings, giving up three runs on six hits and two walks. He struck out one. Walker was making his seventh start after coming out of the bullpen in his last two appearances.

Carson Palmquist (0-2), making his second major league start, lasted 4 1/3 innings, giving up seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits and four walks. He struck out two.

Nick Martini hit his first homer this season and had two hits as did Jordan Beck, Ezequiel Tovar and Hunter Goodman for Colorado.
