It’s a clean slate for the San Francisco Giants as they travel to the Winter Meetings that are getting started in Orlando, Fla.

With manager Tony Vitello going to get his feet wet in a big way with other MLB clubs, the Giants are going to be focusing on some starting pitching right now.

They need to do so, even with Logan Webb as the No. 1 starter and ace of the Giants’ rotation.

The overarching goal of the Giants heading into 2026 is getting back among the leaders in the National League West Division. Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey is probably tired of looking up and seeing the Los Angeles Dodgers hog the spotlight.

It’s not like the Dodgers don’t deserve it. How do you get around the fact that Los Angeles is back-to-back World Series champions? The Giants cannot do so.

San Francisco has decided to take a new direction in the dugout with Vitello, who has never managed in the majors and led the University of Tennessee’s baseball program to great success.

So, what’s the latest intel on the Giants heading into the Winter Meetings? An MLB.com article points toward the main focus point.

“The Giants’ most pressing need remains starting pitching depth, which they didn’t have enough of while going 81-81 in 2025 and missing the playoffs for the fourth straight year,” Giants reporter Maria Guardado wrote for MLB.com.

“San Francisco has a pair of All-Stars — Logan Webb and Robbie Ray — at the top of its rotation and a solid third option in Landen Roupp, but the outlook for the rest of the group is unclear,” according to the MLB.com article.

“Justin Verlander is a free agent and Hayden Birdsong couldn’t solve his control issues after being demoted to Triple-A Sacramento, so the Giants will likely need to add at least two starters to ensure they have enough quality arms to get through the season next year.”

If San Francisco comes out of the Winter Meetings without taking some type of action toward adding a starter, then that’s going to be a head-scratcher. The Giants want to make sure they have everything lined up for success next season.

Look for the Giants to get another arm. Of course, San Francisco might also add another bat for the lineup, too.

It’s going to be interesting to see how the Winter Meetings pan out for the Giants.
