Orange County — The Texas Rangers are investigating the death of an Orange County Jail inmate found hanging in his cell.
Sheriff Bobby Smith tells KFDM that shortly before 8 p.m. Sunday, jail staff was conducting inmate checks when they discovered an inmate hanging inside his jail cell. The jail staff immediately entered the cell, which was occupied only by the unresponsive inmate, and began performing life saving measures. The jail staff continued to perform life saving measures until paramedics arrived.
The inmate was transported by ambulance to CHRISTUS St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont. He died at 11:30 a.m. Monday. J.P. Ben Collins Sr. ordered an autopsy.
