The Red Sox have a lot of decisions to make this offseason, and a big question is whether they will re-sign Alex Bregman.

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported that the third baseman “still appears to be the Red Sox’ No. 1 target, in part because of the defensive upgrade he provided over Rafael Devers.”

Bregman opted out of the final two years of his deal with the Red Sox after spending the 2025 season in Boston. He finished the campaign with 18 home runs, 62 RBI and a .272 batting average — numbers that likely would have been inflated had he not missed 43 games due to a quad injury.

However, Boston seems to be “pricing every available option” including Pete Alonso, Bo Bichette, Ketel Marte and Isaac Paredes.

Marte has been a popular name in trade rumors since the Winter Meetings began and has been connected to several teams including the Boston Red Sox.

Arizona is seeking young, controllable pitching if it decides to deal Marte, MassLive’s Sean McAdam and Chris Cotillo reported, adding the Red Sox and the Diamondbacks have engaged in trade talks for the infielder, though Arizona is not “intent on moving Marte.”

“The source cautioned that no deal is close and estimated that the Red Sox are, at the same time, conducting trade talks with “three or four other” teams in an effort to improve their roster,” MassLive wrote.

The Red Sox have plenty of young pitchers with control who have major league experience. By acquiring Sonny Gray and Johan Oviedo, Boston has more starting pitchers than spots in the rotation.

Marte would provide the Red Sox with some offensive pop as a switch-hitter while upgrading the defense in the middle infield.

If the Red Sox were to acquire him, however, they would need to decide where Marcelo Mayer fits. He could play third, but that’s assuming Bregman doesn’t re-sign in Boston.

The Red Sox have also been connected to Alonso recently. The veteran first baseman’s defense has been inconsistent at times, but he’s durable and has the ability to hit 30 home runs. Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow didn’t commit to Triston Casas being the team’s 2026 first baseman, and it’s possible the Red Sox meet with Alonso on Tuesday at the Winter Meetings.

Bichette also fits the mold of what the Red Sox are looking for: A right-handed bat who can play shortstop, second base and third base. The 27-year-old hit .311 with 18 home runs and 94 RBI in 139 games for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2025.
