The New York Mets’ offseason plans took a major turn Tuesday morning as longtime closer Edwin Díaz agreed to a three-year, $69 million contract with the World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

The deal sets a new annual salary record for a relief pitcher and ends Díaz’s six-year run in Queens, leaving the Mets with a significant void at the back end of their bullpen.

Díaz’s future had been one of the franchise’s biggest questions entering the winter, especially after the right-hander rebounded from an inconsistent 2024 season. He returned to elite form in 2025, striking out 98 batters with a 1.63 ERA across 66.1 innings and converting 28-of-31 save chances. His performance earned him a second National League All-Star selection and reaffirmed his status as one of baseball’s premier closers. Over his six seasons with the Mets, Díaz totaled 144 saves and 538 strikeouts, becoming one of the most dominant relievers in club history.

The Mets did add some protection earlier this offseason by signing Devin Williams to a three-year, $51 million contract after his one-year stint with the Yankees.
