When the Minnesota Twins fired Rocco Baldelli, it was a decision made after a 92-loss season. Baldelli certainly wasn’t solely responsible for the team’s performance, and realistically he wasn’t even the key culprit.
Made the fall guy after taking responsibility those above him would not, Baldelli found himself out in the cold. It was never expected that he wouldn’t quickly land somewhere. The question was always whether or not he wanted a job right away.
That answer has now presented itself and he’s right back in the thick of it.
Los Angeles Dodgers hire Rocco Baldelli
The Winter Meetings are taking place down in Orlando, and while that often coincides with player movement, coaching changes take place as well. On Tuesday the Star Tribune’s Bobby Nightengale reported that Rocco Baldelli has a new gig with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Former Twins manager Rocco Baldelli, two months after his exit from the organization, is joining the two-time defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers.
Baldelli is taking a front office role with the Dodgers, two people familiar with the hire told the Minnesota Star Tribune. Baldelli has a long history with Andrew Friedman, the Dodgers’ president of baseball operations, from their time together with the Tampa Bay Rays.
While Baldelli isn’t staying in the dugout, he’s also not going to be taking the summer off. A front office role can often be a springboard to another managerial position, and Minnesota considered that move with Scott Servais this offseason.
What will be most interesting for Baldelli is to go from the Minnesota Twins infrastructure to that of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Andrew Friedman is one of the most respected executives in baseball, and the ownership group spends like no one else. That could not be a more stark difference from Derek Falvey and the Pohlads.

Baldelli gets to see how a World Series team operates, and he joins the club on the heels of them bringing in all-star closer Edwin Diaz. Minnesota has sent out signals that they will be buyers this offseason, but there’s no reason to believe that without proof. The Dodgers absolutely will be, and show it at every opportunity.
It’s not certain that Baldelli will travel with Los Angeles as a member of the front office. However, if he so chooses, the Dodgers play at Target Field this summer. The three game set takes place June 22-24.
