The biggest hurdle of the offseason for the Philadelphia Phillies has seemingly been cleared Tuesday as Kyle Schwarber appears set to return to the organization, after reportedly agreeing to terms on a new deal.

Dave Dombrowski and the staff made it very clear he was their top priority. Now, the Phillies can pivot to address other areas of the team. One of those big areas that needs to be filled is the catcher position, and MLB insider Mark Feinsand believes they will try to bring back another one of their own in J.T. Realmuto.

“Schwarber was clearly the Phillies’ number one priority, so I would assume that they will now turn their attention to Realmuto,” Feinsand wrote for MLB.com. “The catching market is very thin on the free-agent front, and there aren’t a whole lot of options on the trade market, either. Now that they have the Schwarber deal done, I would expect Realmuto to be next on their to-do list.”

Victor Caratini is the best name on the catcher market in free agency not named Realmuto, so there is certainly not much out there for the Phillies if Realmuto signed elsewhere, hence why the organization is now focusing on him bringing him back.

Realmuto may not be the All-Star caliber player that he was in his prime, but he is still solid as ever behind the plate. Offensively, he hit 12 home runs last season and drove in 52 runs for Philadelphia. If he can replicate that production, while continuing to play solid everyday defense behind the plate, he brings a lot of value.

Philadelphia knows getting Realmuto back would have more benefits beyond his production offensively and defensively. He was one of the most respected veterans in the clubhouse during his tenure with the organization and helped keep a strong clubhouse culture for the Phillies.

The veteran catcher is reportedly keen on receiving a three-year deal, so the Phillies would have to provide that for him if they wish to retain him. Given how the Phillies operated with Schwarber and ensured he was well compensated, it’s difficult to see them treating Realmuto any differently.
