The Arizona Diamondbacks will face the San Diego Padres in Mexico City next season.

Major League Baseball announced the return of the Mexico City Series on Wednesday, which will peg the D-backs against the Padres for two games at Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú Béisbol on April 25-26.

Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú Béisbol is home to los Diablos Rojos del México in the Mexican League.

The Diamondbacks were scheduled to face the Padres at the ballpark during the 2020 campaign, but the Mexico City Series was canceled due to COVID-19.

“We are extremely excited to showcase our brand internationally once again and thank Major League Baseball for selecting us,” Diamondbacks president and CEO Derrick Hall said in a press release.

“We have played more games in Mexico than any other team in the league and have invested heavily in growing our fanbase across the border over the years. Mexico has long been a valued location and focal point for us in searching for talent, building relationships and growing the number of loyal D-backs followers.”

Hall had said in March that the D-backs were interested in an international series, noting Mexico made the most sense given its proximity and the passionate fanbase.

“Being a border state, I’d really like to get to Mexico,” Hall said in March. “We have so many fans. We played in Hermosillo for years. They come up and watch our games. I would like to get to the big city.”

Tickets will go on sale to the public on Jan. 19.

The D-backs last played in Mexico in 2019, taking on the Colorado Rockies in a pair of exhibition games in Monterrey. They played exhibition games in Hermosillo from 1998-2003, 2008-10 and 2015. This will be their first regular season game in Mexico.

They opened the 2015 regular season with an international slate, playing two games in Sydney, Australia, against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The last regular season MLB game in Mexico took place in 2024 between the Astros and Rockies in Mexico City, and there were some monster home runs in that matchup.

Mexico City has an elevation of 7,349, well higher than Denver. There were five home runs that traveled further than 435 feet in the two-game series.

During spring training, the Diamondbacks will take on Mexico’s World Baseball Classic squad as it prepares for the tournament. That game will be at Salt River Fields on March 3.

The Diamondbacks will have a day off before and after the Mexico City Series. They host the White Sox before traveling to Mexico and visit the Brewers afterward.
