Boston Red Sox reliever Liam Hendriks had rough back-to-back outings. He gave up 2 runs against the Atlanta Braves and 3 runs against the New York Mets, both games the Red Sox lost.
After the game, there was a lot of frustration sent Hendriks’ way, with plenty of mean and nasty comments on social media about Hendriks. The following morning, Hendriks shared a message on his Instagram Story that called out those comments and the people behind them.

“Just as an FYI: Threats against my life and my wife’s life are horrible and cruel. You need help. Leaving comments telling me to commit suicide and how you wish I died from cancer is disgusting and vile,” Hendriks wrote.
“Maybe you should take a step back and reevaluate your life’s purpose before hiding behind a screen and attacking players and their families.”
Hendriks continued, “Whether you do it from your ‘fake accounts’ or are dumb enough to do it from your real account. I think I speak for all players who have had to deal with this in their career when I say: Enough is enough.”

The strongly worded message from Hendriks is in response to nasty comments from people on social media. Those comments come from individuals going beyond the normal scope of frustrations from a player’s poor performance.

Fans will always express frustration, but comments like those that Hendriks received are well beyond acceptable levels. This isn’t the first time a player has had to deal with such comments, and unfortunately, it likely won’t be the last.
Some individuals, typically those behind anonymous accounts, will send obscene and cruel comments to players and their families following a mistake or poor performance.
While Hendriks may have struggled or not performed up to his standards, the reaction from some ‘fans’ is a step too far. According to Hendriks, individuals on social media called for violence against Hendriks and his family.
Comments, like the ones that Hendriks referenced in his Instagram Story, are out of line and cruel. In the social media age, those comments are easy to make.

The people behind those disgusting comments will likely remain anonymous. While the comments are unlikely to stop completely, Hendriks’ message hopefully gains enough attention to slow down the onslaught of nasty comments sent to him and other players around professional sports.
