The Texas Rangers are once again asking the public for help in solving a decades-old homicide that has remained unsolved for more than 30 years. The case involves the 1992 murder of 81-year-old Raymond “Ray” Adolph Lightner, a well-known Williamson County resident whose death shocked the community. With a newly increased reward and modern forensic testing applied to old evidence, investigators hope someone may finally come forward with information that can close the case.

Background: What Happened in the 1992 Cold Case
On November 12, 1992, officers with the Taylor Police Department discovered Lightner stabbed to death inside his home. According to DPS, Lightner had recently moved back to his residence after spending time at an assisted living center. He was known in the Taylor community for regularly playing dominoes at a local lounge near his home.
Despite interviews, investigative leads, and multiple persons of interest identified early on, none were tied conclusively to the crime. The case eventually went cold, remaining open in the years that followed.
Why Authorities Are Renewing the Search Now
The Texas Department of Public Safety announced that new DNA analysis has been conducted on evidence from the scene, prompting investigators to issue a fresh call for tips. Advancements in forensic technology often allow investigators to reexamine cold cases with tools that didn’t exist at the time of the crime.
This renewed push is part of the Texas Ranger Unsolved Crimes Investigation Program, which regularly highlights cold cases in hopes that increased visibility, paired with modern forensic work, will bring forward new information.
