Brewers manager Pat Murphy on Jace Peterson’s consultant role

Jace Peterson, who played for the Brewers from 2020-22, returned for 2025 as a performance consultant. Manager Pat Murphy explains his role and fit.

Former Milwaukee Brewers infielder Darin Ruf, who briefly played for the team during the 2023 season, is suing the Cincinnati Reds after an injury caused by a tarp at Great American Ballpark effectively ended his career.

Signed in May 2023 in an attempt to alleviate the team’s struggles against left-handed pitching, Ruf played in only 11 games before his encounter with the equipment against the Reds on June 3.

Ruf was chasing a foul ball before running into a tarp roller used to cover the infield during bad weather. He fractured his kneecap, suffered a deep laceration on his knee, and left the game before landing on the 60-day injured list. He did not play another big-league game.

Ruf’s lawsuit, filed May 22, cites the lack of a protective cushioning on the equipment, exposing sharp metal, and said the metal was obstructed from view by an advertisement.

It’s the same stadium where, in July, rehabbing first baseman Rowdy Tellez tore up his left hand shagging fly balls, requiring stitches, breaking the tip of his ring finger and prolonging his stay on the injured list by multiple weeks.
