The UC San Diego Tritons confirmed on Wednesday that right-handed pitcher Shoei Darvish—the son of San Diego Padres pitcher Yu Darvish—is officially joining the baseball program.

Darvish is one of eight players in the school’s Class of 2026, joining Caden Atkinson, Caden Dockan, Owen Glick, Kelle Leuck, Adam Plascencia, Tyler Starling and Jonathan Tena.

Given his lineage, however, Darvish is the biggest name of the group.

“Shoei competes with the kind of edge and focus you expect from someone with big-league pedigree,” head coach Eric Newman said in a statement. “His fastball, secondary pitches and baseball IQ give him tremendous upside, and we’re excited to see him grow within our program.”
