The Kansas City Royals are closing in on a long-term deal with third baseman Maikel Garcia, according to a report from ESPN’s Jeff Passan on Friday.
The sides are finalizing a five-year contract extension that includes a club option for a sixth season. No financial details were reported.
Garcia, 25, is coming off a breakout campaign in which he earned a Gold Glove and has been a versatile part of the roster. He has spent time at shortstop, second base, centre field and right field but he mainly plays at third base and finished 14th in American League MVP voting.
Garcia saw an increase in offensive production, hitting .286/.351/.449 with 16 home runs, 74 RBIs and 23 stolen bases.
With the deal, the Royals have just Garcia and Bobby Witt Jr. under contract past the 2028 season.
