The San Diego Padres have been rumored for some time to be weighing some cost-cutting moves this offseason, and while the likes of Xander Bogaerts and Fernando Tatis Jr. aren’t likely to be included, a lot of their other stars could be up for grabs.

With a looming sale of the club and the A.J. Preller unafraid of making blockbuster trades, San Diego could become very active in the trade market this winter.
According to a report from Ken Rosenthal, Will Sammon, and Dennis Lin of The Athletic, the Padres are in trade talks with the New York Mets over five players. Among those five players are trade deadline pickup and superstar closer Mason Miller.

“The Padres’ players in the talks include right-hander Nick Pivetta, outfielder Ramon Laureano, and relievers Mason Miller, Adrian Morejon, and Jeremiah Estrada.”

This report from the trio of writers from The Athletic is a very noteworthy one. Not only are the Padres in trade talks with the Mets – a piece of news itself – but they’re eyeing some major moves as part of these talks.
Miller would be a huge asset to give up in a trade, as the Padres learned at the trade deadline when they gave up Leo De Vries to the Athletics for Miller.
But, less than a year later, the Padres are considering making a drastic change by moving on from Miller in a deal with the Mets.

While nothing is close to being done, the Padres’ willingness to discuss Miller in trade talks is very noteworthy. Nick Pivetta being in trade rumors is hardly a surprise, with his expensive contract of $19 million giving San Diego reason to move him.
But Morejon, Estrada, and Laureano are all valuable players on reasonable contracts. And yet, the Padres are exploring trades to move on from those players.

Despite making the postseason in 2025, Preller looks to shake up the core of this roster in a major way. Not all of these players will be traded this winter, if at all. But, they’re willingness to trade them is a concerning rumor for Padres fans.
Change is coming in San Diego, and it could even include the departure of Mason Miller, the team’s prized trade deadline pickup from just half a year ago.
