GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) – A Gator baseball great is signing a new deal that breaks history. Former Gator Pete Alonso has signed with the Baltimore Orioles. The agreement is for five years, with a total value of $ 155 million.
So, how does this break history? Well, it marks the largest MLB contract by a Florida Gator in school history. It is also the second-largest pro-sports contract by a former Gator, and it’s the highest average annual value by any former SEC player. Finally, it’s the second-highest average annual value among MLB first basemen.
Alonso was a Gator from 2014 to 2016, where he helped lead Florida to two World Series appearances. Through his Florida career, he sent 21 balls over the back wall. This makes it no surprise that Alonso holds the all-time home run record by a rookie with 53, which he set in 2019. As well as being the Mets’ all-time home run leader, which he broke this past season, with a total of 264 home runs.
