Cody Bellinger has been linked to big-market teams such as the New York Yankees and New York Mets in free agency. The Toronto Blue Jays have also been mentioned as a potential suitor for the 2019 MVP. Could the Cincinnati Reds shock the MLB world by signing Cody Bellinger, though? While it may not seem likely to come to fruition, the Reds should at least pursue him in free agency.

The Reds want to build a contending team. They were reportedly interested in Kyle Schwarber before he returned to the Philadelphia Phillies. Bellinger is understandably going to want a large contract, but that should not deter Cincinnati from pursuing him.

At the moment, the Reds’ outfield has serious question marks. TJ Friedl, Noelvi Marte, Gavin Lux and Will Benson are among the candidates to earn playing time in the outfield in 2026. Bellinger would present an upgrade — and it is worth noting that he can realistically play any outfield position if necessary.

At 30 years old, Bellinger is going to want a long-term deal. He can also play first base, so the Reds could move him to the infield in the future if his outfield defense ever declines. Right now, though, Bellinger’s outfield defense is one of his strengths. Of course, Cincinnati would also benefit from having the left-handed slugger in the middle of the lineup.

Bellinger hit .272/.334/.480 across 152 games played in New York with the Yankees in 2025. He added 29 home runs. Bellinger can also steal some bases.

He’s played in big markets such as Los Angeles, Chicago and New York, so he wouldn’t have any trouble in Cincinnati. In fact, he may even take a step forward as another offensive star with the Reds alongside Elly De La Cruz.

In all reality, there have not been many rumors suggesting potential interest from the Reds. He’s probably going to end up signing with a big-market ball club. He is still a free agent, though, so there is nothing stopping the Reds from at least attempting to discuss a deal with him.

The Baltimore Orioles already surprised many by signing former New York Mets star Pete Alonso. Recent rumors have suggested that the Arizona Diamondbacks are interested in Alex Bregman. Smaller market teams have the ability to pursue stars, so the Reds should jump at the opportunity right now.
