The Los Angeles Dodgers already made a big splash this offseason with the signing of three-time All-Star closer Edwin Díaz, but could there be another substantial move on the horizon before Opening Day?
Recently, Bleacher Report proposed the Dodgers get involved in a three-team trade to add an All-Star second baseman and additional bullpen help. Below are the details of the scenario:

Tampa Bay Rays Receive: SS CJ Abrams (from WAS), RHP Patrick Copen (from LAD) and Robert Hassell III (from WAS)
Los Angeles Dodgers Receive: 2B Brandon Lowe (from TBR) and RHP Griffin Jax (from TBR)
Washington Nationals Receive: OF Zyhir Hope (from LAD) and SS Carson Williams (from TBR)
A productive 2025 saw Lowe become an All-Star for the second time in his career. The 31-year-old hit 31 home runs, which tied New York Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. For the most among their position. He also led all second basemen with 83 RBIs.

The addition of Jax also gives Los Angeles additional firepower from their relievers, and he could set up Díaz in a situation where the two could combine to become a one-two punch.
“The Dodgers would be getting another solid right-handed reliever in Griffin Jax and one heck of a one-year solution at second base in Brandon Lowe,” it wrote. “Ideally, by the time 2027 begins, top prospect Josue De Paula will be ready for everyday work in the outfield, and they can slide Tommy Edman back to second after spending the majority of 2026 in the outfield. And the Rays move Lowe’s $11M salary while also getting three years of an established offensive weapon at shortstop, which they’ve been looking for since abruptly losing Wander Franco’s bat in the middle of 2023.”
The Rays chose to pick up Lowe’s $11.5 million team option in November, but his salary may prove too steep for incoming ownership to justify as they will, at least for the upcoming season, continue operating under a stringent payroll that has defined Tampa Bay’s acquisitions throughout franchise history.

It is a different story for the Dodgers, who have proven a willingness to dig into their pockets to acquire the best talent, no matter how deep in payment deferrals they get. Adding Lowe for a year to see how things play out and tacking on Jax’s $3.5 million may be a viable option.
However, the thought of giving up Jax and Williams — who was Tampa Bay’s top prospect before eventually being called up late in the season — may prove to be a bridge too far. However, as Bleacher Report points out, the addition of Abrams may entice the Rays and put Lowe and Jax in the Dodgers’ lap.
