Mike Hazen gives update on where Diamondbacks stand at Winter Meetings
Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen breaks down where the team is at in terms of building the 2026 roster this winter.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are reuniting with right-hander Merrill Kelly, who agreed to terms with the club on a two-year, $40 million deal, a source confirmed on Sunday, Dec. 14.
The deal makes sense for both sides. Kelly, who had been pitching for the Diamondbacks on a team-friendly extension before he was sent to Texas in a deadline deal, gets a contract at market value. The Diamondbacks, on the other hand, get the proven starter they desperately needed.
Kelly is coming off a year in which he logged a 3.52 ERA in 32 starts, 22 of which came with the Diamondbacks.
Following last week’s signing of right-hander Michael Soroka to a one-year, $7.5 million deal, the Diamondbacks now have five starters in their rotation. According to a source, the deal does not change the likelihood of a Ketel Marte trade.
Kelly and Soroka join right-handers Ryne Nelson and Brandon Pfaadt and lefty Eduardo Rodriguez.
The agreement between Kelly and the Diamondbacks was first reported by The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. Jon Heyman of the New York Post confirmed the agreement, adding that the deal is pending a physical.
Kelly pitched the first 6 1/2 seasons of his big-league career with the Diamondbacks, who signed him to a major-league contract in December 2018 after he spent four years pitching in South Korea.
He posted uneven results for the first few years of his career before taking a step forward in 2022. Over the past four years, he has posted a strong 3.47 ERA in 108 starts.
Kelly went to high school and college in Arizona and makes his home in Valley, and he made no secret that he was more than open to signing back with the Diamondbacks. However, the club’s payroll situation complicated the possibility of a reunion. The team ultimately found a way to get a deal done.
