The Boston Red Sox continue to be shut out on the free agent market, as they’ve missed out on reported interests like Pete Alonso, Kyle Schwarber and Michael King.
Furthermore, they have yet to solidify a reunion with Alex Bregman, and things there are getting dicier by the minute. They haven’t signed Bo Bichette, Eugenio Suarez or anyone else they’ve been linked to. They even missed out on a second-tier free agent in Jorge Polanco.

We are more than two months into the MLB offseason, with less than two months remaining until spring training, and the Red Sox hold a disappointing distinction: They are yet to sign a major league free agent. They are the only American League team to not sign a big-league free agent.
As they look to build upon a playoff berth from 2025, that’s a sad outcome thus far. There have been opportunities to get better from the outside, and Boston hasn’t taken full advantage.
That’s not to say that the Red Sox haven’t been building. They added Sonny Gray and Johan Oviedo in trades, and that can’t be ignored, but this team has other needs and they can’t all be filled on the trade market.

Well, they need to figure out what’s happening with Bregman. Once they know that, they can figure out how the rest of the roster is impacted. Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell are both affected by a potential Bregman reunion, or by a Bichette or Suarez signing that replaces him.

Once they have that answer, they can get to work on potentially trading away Jarren Duran or Wilyer Abreu, or they can work on figuring out what to do with Masataka Yoshida, who still has two years left on his contract.
Another reason why the Red Sox offseason performance is so disappointing? The American League around them isn’t stopping. The Seattle Mariners re-signed Josh Naylor, acquired Jose Ferrer and are in the mix for Ketel Marte and Brendan Donovan.

The Blue Jays, won the American League East last season, have added Dylan Cease, Cody Ponce and Tyler Rogers – and they don’t appear to be done.
The Yankees are expected to bring back Cody Bellinger, fortifying their offense.
Meanwhile the Red Sox have done next to nothing as they look to improve off a solid year. There was a lot of talk about being “decisive” and “aggressive” this offseason, but so far? It hasn’t come to fruition.
