The Yankees have signed Kingston’s Zack Short to a minor league contract.
If Short can make the team out of spring training, his experience at shortstop could be valuable, with Anthony Volpe expected to miss the start of the season. His recovery could delay his return, potentially sending him on a rehab assignment to open the season.
Short, 30, did not immediately return a message seeking comment for this story on Friday night.
José Caballero is expected to handle most of the shortstop duties while Volpe is out, but Short provides an option off the bench. Short has made 122 career appearances at shortstop, along with 55 at third base and 61 at second.
Since making his debut with the Chicago Cubs in 2021, Short has played for the Tigers, Mets, Red Sox, Braves, and Astros. In 248 MLB games in his career, Short has made only 20 errors. Short played 22 games with the Houston Astros last season, hitting .220 with two homers and seven RBI, spending most of the campaign with the club’s Triple-A affiliate.
Short, a 2013 Kingston High graduate, was drafted out of Sacred Heart University by the Chicago Cubs in the 17th round of the 2016 MLB draft.
