The Boston Red Sox came into the offseason needing to make a few big moves this offseason. Third baseman Alex Bregman is a free agent, and the Red Sox should be prioritizing a new contract with him. But the veteran is projected to sign a massive deal, so there’s a chance the Red Sox whiff on him.
As a result, Boston could be forced to replace Bregman with the next best option. While there are some solid options in free agency, the best solution is likely on the trade market.
FanSided’s Christopher Kline predicted the Red Sox would swing a trade for Arizona Diamondbacks veteran infielder Ketel Marte in the coming weeks.

“The Arizona Diamondbacks appear increasingly likely to trade Ketel Marte, who’s on one of the best value deals in MLB through 2030,” Kline wrote. “Does that make sense? Not really, but clearly Marte has done something the upset the balance of Arizona’s clubhouse. As for the ideal trade partner, it’s pretty clearly the Red Sox.”
Marte is one of the best second basemen in the league right now, and he would fit perfectly with the Red Sox. The veteran would slot in at second base while Marcelo Mayer slides over to third base to replace Bregman.
It would take quite a haul for the Red Sox to land the star, but they have the prospects to do it. With Bregman’s future in question, this is a move the front office needs to make.
