In recent days, the SF Giants have DFA’d two outfielders in Joey Wiemer and Wade Meckler. They also recently moved on from Marco Luciano and may not be done making cuts to their outfield ranks.
These moves may suggest that the Giants are planning to make some sort of upgrade to the outfield, or maybe it is just a realization that they have too many outfielders without any minor league options on the 40-man roster and it is a natural thinning of the herd.
SF Giants may move on from even more outfielders after recent moves
Either way, there is not going to be enough room on the team for all of their outfielders to make it onto next year’s Opening Day roster. That is why these three players could ultimately be on the chopping block when push comes to shove.
Luis Matos
Matos is out of minor league options so this upcoming season may be his last chance to earn a spot on the team’s roster. We have seen him get hot at the plate for a week or two and prove he can hit at the big league level, but he has just been unable to sustain that success.
His future with the team has been uncertain for some time and if he does not have a good enough spring training the Giants will have to designate him for assignment.
Jerar Encarnacion
Injuries robbed Encarnacion the chance to prove himself in 2025 as they seemed to come right when he was hot at the plate. The Giants may give him one more chance in 2026 to see if he can be a designated hitter or outfield depth piece but if not then it may be time to move on.
Justin Dean
The Giants added Justin Dean on a waiver claim after the Los Angeles Dodgers DFA’d him. He is a defense-first outfielder who does not do much at the plate and he would be nice to have on the roster as a fourth outfielder who could come in late in games and track down balls in the gap.
However, the fact that he is not a big hitter could hurt his chances which is why the Giants may ultimately have to move on from him if they cannot find a place for him on the roster.
The Giants may not want to let some of these guys go, but with the roster shaping up the way it is and the fact that the Giants could add yet another outfielder to the mix it seems like at least one of these guys will be let go before the start of next season.
