Team USA won the 2017 WBC with an 8-0 win over Puerto Rico in the championship, securing USA’s only WBC title in five tournaments. The WBC was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Prior to that, Team USA was eliminated in the second round of the 2013 WBC with a 4-3 loss to Puerto Rico. The Dominican Republic won the 2013 WBC with a 3-0 win over Puerto Rico.
In the 2009 WBC, Team USA was eliminated in the semifinals with a 9-4 loss to Japan. Earlier in that tournament, Team USA suffered a mercy rule defeat, losing 11-1 to Puerto Rico in a seven-inning shortened game.
At the inaugural WBC in 2006, Team USA was eliminated in the semifinals following a 2-1 loss to Mexico.
