The St. Louis Cardinals have been active this offseason. They kicked off the winter by trading Sonny Gray to the Boston Red Sox. A few weeks later, the Cardinals and Red Sox agreed to another deal that would send veteran infielder Willson Contreras to Boston, too.

The Cardinals will likely continue to make big moves in the coming weeks.

FanSided’s Cody Williams predicted the Cardinals would trade All-Star infielder Brendan Donovan to the Seattle Mariners before the offseason ends.

St. Louis Cardinals infielder Brendan Donovan

“The Seattle Mariners have been installed as the favorites for Donovan by insiders basically since the winter meetings, and it makes perfect sense,” Williams wrote. “The M’s aren’t looking to take a step back after last season’s run to the ALCS, but they also have already re-signed Josh Naylor while not expressing a ton of interest in reuniting with Eugenio Suarez and with Jorge Polanco signing with the Mets.”

Out of all the potential trade fits in the league, a trade of Donovan to the Mariners might make the most sense.

The Mariners have a massive hole at second base after Jorge Polanco bolted in free agency. They have the prospect capital to go after the top infielders on the trade market, but it seems unlikely they take a big enough shot to go after Ketel Marte. Instead, Donovan would be the perfect fit.

Donovan’s defensive versatility makes him a very interesting option for the Mariners. He could slide in around the infield and in the corner outfield slots to give the Mariners more lineup flexibility.
