JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Moments after Chiefs owner Clark Hunt joined Kansas Governor Laura Kelly in announcing the team’s move to the Sunflower State, Missouri’s top politician expressed his disagreement with the decision.
Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe addressed the media Monday afternoon from the State Capitol, saying the Chiefs’ decision is a disservice to their fans.
“The State of Missouri is the best home for the Kansas City Chiefs. State leaders did our part in putting together an attractive and competitive package that was a good deal for Missouri taxpayers and for the Chiefs,” Kehoe stated. “Missouri’s incentives would have empowered the Chiefs organization to grow and invest in the unparalleled Arrowhead experience, creating a true legacy stadium for the next generation.
“Unfortunately, team ownership has decided to abandon Lamar Hunt’s legacy at the iconic Arrowhead Stadium, a place that Chiefs fans have rallied around since 1972,” he added.
Kehoe said Missouri will continue to maintain a good working relationship with the Chiefs. He also expressed a desire to keep the Chiefs’ neighbors at the Truman Sports Complex – the Kansas City Royals.
“If I’m the Royals, I’m in the driver’s seat. The Royals are also a great legacy team that we would love to keep in Missouri, and we will do everything we can to continue those conversations.”
