The Chicago Cubs are still looking to figure out how to get the roster to a point where they can be comfortable dominating on the mound. However, they are still searching for some pitching health as we approach the new year. While there are still a lot of quality free agents available that can fill a void in the roster, there are trades that will also do the trick. Let’s take a closer look at one possible trade for pitching help that can make the Cubs even better.
The Chicago Cubs could trade away Seiya Sukuzi to the Cleveland Guardians

The Cubs have been searching for pitching while still remaining in the Kyle Tucker free agency sweepstakes. There is a way to still do both, and it involves trading with the Cleveland Guardians. It has been reported that the Guardians are searching for right-handed hitting outfielders and Suzuki fits that mold. The Cubs were shopping him around last offseason to no avail, and if he is willing to waive his no-trade clause, Cleveland could be a good landing spot.
Chicago needs some pitching help, and with Cleveland adding bullpen depth in free agency thus far, names like relievers Cade Smith, Hunter Gaddis, or even a middle-of-the-rotation starting pitcher could be on the table. The Guardians are not going to want to eat Suzuki’s entire $18 million salary either, so the Cubs may be able to get another multiple pitchers or a minor leaguer to help bolster the farm.
Suzuki played 151 games in 2025 and finished with a .804 OPS with 32 home runs, 103 RBI, and 75 runs scored. This would be selling him off at his highest point and getting another need. If the Cubs are able to land another outfielder to replace his production at the plate, adding pitching with a Suzuki trade would be great for the franchise.
