The New York Mets sent Jeff McNeil to the Athletics on Monday, and they’re now looking to bolster the roster before the start of the season.

Their next move could include a big signing. Per ESPN’s Jorge Castillo, “free agent Cody Bellinger is among the options the Mets have considered adding this offseason.”

New York is also reportedly interested in a trade for Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte.

The Mets have seen a few departures so far this offseason, including Pete Alonso, Edwin Diaz, Brandon Nimmo and now McNeil, but they’ve also brought in some talent.

One of the most notable additions is Marcus Semien, whom New York landed after trading Nimmo to the Texas Rangers. Semien will presumably take over McNeil’s post at second base.

Bellinger is one of the top free agents on the market this offseason after hitting .272 with 29 home runs and 98 RBI for the New York Yankees during the 2025 campaign.

Bellinger’s agent, Scott Boras, appeared to reveal the outfielder’s possible landing spots earlier this month, and the Mets were one of the teams Boras alluded to.

“It’s not for me to Judge, but great players see Red if they have a big bat Yanked out of their lineup,” Boras said at Winter Meetings. “I haven’t Met a team that Dodges a five-tool player. To Phil the center field need is a Giant step towards the playoffs. North and south outfielders that fly with power, they’re rare Birds. In the offseason, there’s a lot of startup to organizations, and for that reason, there’s a lot of Angel investors that are looking for very versatile outfielders. So other than that, Belli doesn’t have much interest.”

According to Spotrac, Bellinger has a market value of $30.4 million per year.

Marte is one of the top trade candidates remaining at this point, but whether the Diamondbacks are willing to part ways with him remains a question mark. The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported last week that there is a “scenario” where Arizona keeps Marte while also signing free agent Alex Bregman.

If the D-backs can make that scenario come to fruition, it would seemingly be the best option.

But it seems more realistic that Arizona would trade Marte and focus on Bregman, so the Mets could be an option if the Diamondbacks seek a trade partner.
