McComb-born, Brookhaven-raised Corey Dickerson was hired as the Tampa Bay Rays’ first-base coach Monday.

Dickerson played for the Rays from 2016-2017 amidst his 11-year career in the MLB, and he will also work with the club’s outfielders and oversee base running.

“I am thrilled to congratulate and welcome Corey to serve as our first-base coach,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said in a statement. “I look forward to him bringing his experience and expertise to the Major League club.”

Dickerson most recently served as the head baseball coach at Jackson Academy after officially retiring from the majors in 2024.

He played for eight teams over his career from 2013-2023, and his lone All-Star nod came with the Rays in 2017. Dickerson also won the Gold Glove while with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2018, and he finished his playing days with 136 home runs and 469 RBI to his name.

Dickerson was originally born in McComb but grew up in Brookhaven, where he attended Brookhaven Academy and starred as a baseball, football and basketball player. He holds the school’s records for batting average (.591) and runs brought in (55) and claims multiple MAIS records as well.

Following his time as a Cougar, Dickerson played at Meridian Community College before he was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in 2010.
