Often, the bridesmaid and rarely the bride, the Detroit Tigers had their best chance in recent memory to secure an American League Central title in 2025. Unfortunately, the Tigers blew a massive 15-1/2-game lead over their rivals, Cleveland, losing 14 of their last 20 regular-season contests (including five of six to the aforementioned Guardians) and settling for a Wild Card berth. Though Detroit did bounce back to beat Cleveland in their best-of-three wild card series, Seattle proved too strong in the ALDS, sending the Tigers home with their tails between their legs once again.
Thankfully, the Detroit faithful do not have long to wait before a new crop of talent takes the field at Comerica Park. In addition to arguably two of the ten best prospects in baseball, the Tigers also have a plethora of high-floor (but low-ceiling) arms looking to make an impact at the big league level in the next couple of years. Whether the front office will spend to extend Tarik Skubal, the best pitcher in the American League, remains to be seen. Even in a world where Skubal walks as a free agent or leaves via trade, the Tigers have plenty to look forward to in 2028.
