We’re about two and a half months from the 2025 MLB Draft, and Baseball America had another mock draft this week. This one was an exercise in which six BA writers made selections for each team for the first 50 picks.
For the Dodgers’ first pick, at No. 40 overall, they landed on Gavin Fien, a third baseman and outfielder for Great Oak High School in Temecula, about 92 miles south of Dodger Stadium.
Carlos Collazo made this selection in this exercise and explained, “I think he’s the best pure hitter available and has been for about 15 picks or so. I expect him to go significantly higher than this in the actual draft.”
Fien has a college commitment to Texas if he does not turn pro.
MLB Pipeline ranks Fien as the 29th-best player in the draft, with this scouting report:
Fien is a 6-foot-2 right-handed hitter with plenty of bat speed who produced consistent line drives against top competition all summer. While he has an unorthodox setup with high hands, he made it work and was always on time, but this spring he had more trouble finding his rhythm and was often late in pulling the trigger at the dish. He’s added strength, and there could be more power to come as he advances.
Baseball America rates Fien as the No. 27 prospect in the draft.
The 2025 MLB Draft will be held from July 13-15 in Atlanta.
