After a shameful collapse in 2025, the New York Mets have their eyes on a bounce-back 2026 campaign. It won’t be an easy task, however, as they’ve lost two franchise players in first baseman Pete Alonso and closer Edwin Diaz to free agency this winter. Not only will they have to sufficiently fill those holes, but they’ll need to add more talent to fix what went wrong last season.
Luckily for Mets fans, their owner, Steve Cohen, is more than willing to help. He’s no stranger to committing huge sums of money to bring or keep players in New York in hopes of bringing the Mets back to the World Series for the first time since 2015. Just last winter, he paid outfielder Juan Soto $765 million to leave the cross-town rival New York Yankees and don the blue pinstripes.

It’s a hard deal to follow up this offseason, but the Mets are sure to bring in some big talent this winter. Following an embarrassing end to 2025, the Mets are desperate to make up for it in 2026. It’s why they are ranked as the third most desperate team in the MLB in Kerry Miller’s recent Bleacher Report article.
“The Mets easily could climb to No. 1 if they actually show some desperation this winter in the form of adding Kyle Tucker/Cody Bellinger and an ace,” Miller wrote. “As is, though, their total spending (including tax payments) from 2021-25 was $1.897 billion—a mere $77M behind the Dodgers and more than $320M more than even the Yankees have spent. And for their trouble, they’ve missed the playoffs three times and have won a combined total of eight postseason games.”
Mets fans are still waiting for the league-altering move to happen this offseason, with dreams of trading for left-handed ace Tarik Skubal or signing outfielders Kyle Tucker or Cody Bellinger. They’ve gone deeper into this offseason without their big splash, but the Mets are expected to make something big happen this offseason.

It hasn’t been a quiet offseason so far for New York, as they’ve signed reliever Devin Williams, infielder Jorge Polanco, and reliever Luke Weaver in free agency. It’s three moves that certainly strengthen the squad in preparation for a big 2026, but it’s time now to make the big move that Mets fans have been waiting for all offseason.
