In Yankee Land, all anyone cares about is titles, and it has been a long time since the organization has been able to call itself World Series champions. The last time that the New York Yankees hoisted the trophy was the 2009 season, and things have started to get a little stale within the organization.
*PREDICTION*
New York has reached the playoffs almost every season, but it has fallen short each time since 2009. Making the World Series in 2024 didn’t help things, as they were bounced out in a quick five-game series.
Entering 2026, the Yankees’ brass has been looking for avenues to upgrade the roster, specifically with more depth across the board. Oftentimes, the Yankees have relied far too heavily on the star players within the team to carry everything, and it has come back to hurt them.
We could see the Yankees look to add some veteran players for bench spots, giving this team more of a well-rounded approach as we head into the new year. But who the team will target or add remains unknown at this time, but it will ultimately determine the overall ceiling of this club in 2026.

Gio Urshela Heads Back to New York, Signs With Yankees
With the Yankees needing to add more depth and buy-low pieces to the roster, it could see the team look to an old friend on the free agent market. That would be veteran infielder Gio Urshela, who spent multiple years with the pinspripes a few seasons ago.
Urshela spent the 2025 season with the Athletics, but things didn’t go as planned for him. After signing with the team in free agency last year, the veteran was eventually designated for assignment and finally cleared waivers in August 2025.
For the 2025 season, Urshela only appeared in 59 games for the Athletics, and there was a lot left to be desired. Overall, the veteran infielder hit .238 with zero home runs and 20 runs batted in.
The 2025 year was one to forget for Urshela, and now he will be looking to have a bounce-back season in 2026. Going back to the Yankees could help him reclaim his stride, especially since he looked fairly comfortable with New York at times.
His best stretch of his career came with New York, spanning the 2019 season to the 2021 season. In 291 games played in his career for the Yankees, Urshela posted a batting average of .292 with 41 home runs, 296 hits, and 153 runs batted in.
If anything, the team could sign Urshela to a deal that invites him to Spring Training next year, giving him a chance to show the organization what he could do. This could be a very low-risk move for the Yankees, and one that, if it were to work out, could have big ramifications on the roster for the 2026 season.
