The Boston Red Sox have made many key trades this offseason, and recently acquired Willson Contreras from the St. Louis Cardinals.

Contreras is a solid addition to the Red Sox’s lineup, but Craig Breslow recently noted that adding another bat is a priority for the team. That bat may in fact be Alex Bregman, as MassLive’s Chris Cotillo noted on Tuesday that re-signing Alex Bregman remains “Plan A” for the Red Sox. However, they are not the only team trying to land Bregman.

According to Bruce Levine on WSCR-AM in Chicago, “the Cubs have had many conversations with Scott Boras about Alex Bregman.”

The more competition there is for Bregman, the more he could cost the Red Sox. The Cubs being involved could be worrisome for Boston. The Cubs were reportedly involved in his sweepstakes last offseason, and they may be more desperate to land him this winter.

The Cubs could lose Kyle Tucker this winter, meaning they will need to find a way to replace his production in the lineup. Bregman is not a direct replacement for the Cubs, but he would be a step in that direction. Bregman was an All-Star for the first time since 2019 last season.

He slashed .273/.360/.462 with 18 home runs last season. He was also a great leader for the Red Sox and would be a great addition to any clubhouse in baseball. If the Cubs swipe Bregman, the Red Sox would have to pivot to other, potentially lesser, options.
