According to El Extra Base’s Daniel Álvarez-Montes, veteran right-hander Nabil Crismatt signed a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers, adding to their pitching depth. While there was no deal in place for Crismatt to rejoin the Diamondbacks next season, his departure leaves Arizona without one of the arms that stepped up amid a midseason pitching shortage.

Crismatt joined Arizona on Aug. 9 after being released by the Philadelphia Phillies organization and was called up to the majors on Aug. 17. Known for his ability to work both as a starter and reliever throughout his MLB tenure, the right-hander was frequently used for bulk innings, either opening games or eating innings out of the bullpen.

During his short stint with the Diamondbacks, Crismatt posted a 3.71 ERA with 25 strikeouts and a 1.44 WHIP over 34.0 innings.

The former Diamondback was then designated for an assignment on Sept. 26 to make roster space and elected free agency in October.

Crismatt was not a Cy Young contender, but he provided much-needed stability as multiple Arizona starters went down with injuries. With one fewer free-agent option on the pitching market, the Diamondbacks are now down another potential arm to address one of their biggest offseason needs.

As the holidays wrap up and the offseason nears its end, Arizona still has significant work to do on its pitching staff before spring training, now with one less available option to consider.
