The Boston Red Sox added to their outfield depth Friday by signing former Pittsburgh Pirates prospect Matt Fraizer to a minor league contract. Fraizer shared the news himself on his Instagram account.

Fraizer is a former third-round pick in the 2019 MLB Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates out of the University of Arizona. He was the Pirates’ minor league player of the year in 2021, when he posted a .939 OPS across High-A and Double-A.

Frazier played 62 games at Triple-A in 2025 and slashed .305/.361/.452/.813 with 3 HR, 18 2B, and 1 3B. Also stole 14 SB. Plays all 3 OF spots. 3rd round pick back in 2019.

Going into the 2022 season, he was the No. 10 prospect in the Pirates’ system according to MLB Pipeline. But his swing mechanics regressed amid a season that saw him hit .219 with a .616 OPS at Double-A. Fraizer repeated the level in 2023, and split the 2024 season between Double-A and Triple-A.

The 27-year-old had a bit of a breakout at Triple-A Indianapolis in 2025, slashing .305/.361/.452 with 14 stolen bases in 62 games.

According to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com, Fraizer received an invitation to the Red Sox’s minor league spring training camp. The Red Sox already have four left-handed hitting outfielders on their projected roster in Roman Anthony, Jarren Duran, Wilyer Abreu and Masataka Yoshida.

Barring a trade and/or a spring training breakout, expect Fraizer to begin the season at Triple-A.
