Trade idea has Yankees acquiring Freddy Peralta.

It’s been a slow offseason to this point in the Big Apple. The team from Queens, the Mets, have made a few more meaningful moves than the New York Yankees, but both teams seem to have lost more production than gained in MLB’s hot stove season.

However, fortunately for both New York clubs, there is still a lot of time remaining this offseason, and there has been no shortage of rumors for both New York organizations, as two of the biggest spenders in MLB, the Yankees and Mets, will continue to be linked to high-profile names. The most recent for both teams is Milwaukee Brewers starter Freddy Peralta, who had suddenly become the subject of trade rumors this winter.

Both the Mets and Yankees Reportedly Interested in Freddy Peralta

Freddy Peralta is without a doubt the trade candidate this offseason, if the Brewers make him available.

According to multiple reports, the Brewers’ asking price on Peralta remains very high, but if any organizations in baseball have the capital and capability to pull off this monster offseason trade, it’s either of the New York teams.

Will Sammon and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic report that the Mets, Yankees, Braves, and Red Sox have all checked in on Freddy Peralta this offseason, dating back to the Winter Meeting just about a month ago.

Freddy Peralta is undoubtedly the Brewers’ ace of their rotation, so why would they even consider trading him? Well, he’s earning a modest $8 million this season in a contract year, and Milwaukee rarely extends its best free agents, so it would, in a way, make sense to move on from Peralta now and gain MLB-ready arms, bats, or prospects before he ends up walking in free agency.

Which New York Club Needs Freddy Peralta More?

Now here is where things get interesting, and likely more testy for each rival New York fanbase.

The Mets are certainly a lot more reliant on young arms heading into the 2026 season, but the Yankees have a more timely need at this very moment, considering the likes ot Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon are going to start the year on the IL.

However, the Mets feel more desperate to land a starting pitcher. Clay Holmes, Nolan McLean, and David Peterson are the Mets’ frontline starters, which isn’t bad, but the team from Queens had a disastrous end to the 2025 season, which can be traced back to starting pitching and the lack of quality arms down the stretch.

As for Freddy Peralta, he is coming off his best season in MLB, where he posted a 2.70 ERA over 176.2 innings and another season of 200 strikeouts.

Peralta has three straight seasons of making 30+ starts and 200+ strikeouts, and is a two-time All-Star. He is flourishing into one of the game’s best, which is why it makes sense that his asking price would be astronomical.
