Coming off their first playoff appearance since 2021, the Boston Red Sox have been quiet but active in the 2025 free agency period, engaging in talks with several big-name free agents while acquiring depth pieces to strengthen their roster.

Boston’s recent season featured the breakout of several offensive stars, with rookies Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer at the forefront. However, in the wild-card series, Boston found themselves lacking starting pitching options after Lucas Giolito’s elbow issue sidelined him, forcing them to turn to rookie options and Garrett Crochet to carry the heavy load.
In response, the Red Sox opened their free agency by acquiring pitcher Sonny Gray from the St. Louis Cardinals. Recent reports suggest that the Red Sox may still be interested in another ace to pair with Crochet, as The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon reported that the team is among those showing interest in Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Freddy Peralta.
Boston Eyes Rotation Upgrade
Peralta is coming off his second All-Star season, posting an ERA of 2.70 over 33 starts while leading a young Milwaukee team to earn the No. 1 seed in the National League and an appearance in the NL championship series.

However, Peralta is entering the final year of his contract, and the Brewers could be open to moving him for prospects as they continue to build their young team.
If the Red Sox aim to be serious contenders for Peralta, they could offer players like Jarren Duran and Triston Casas, who might appeal to the Brewers as they continue to add depth to their team.
Duran has emerged as a hot name on the trade market, with speculation that the rise of Roman Anthony has made him expendable as the Red Sox look to address holes on their roster.
Duran, 29, is coming off a down season in 2025 but was an All-Star in 2024 and could offer the Brewers a powerful bat for which they lacked last year and elite speed and defense that would pair well with Jackson Chourio in the outfield.
Casas, 25, suffered a season-ending injury in 2025 but has shown considerable upside in his limited time in the majors. The Red Sox’s recent acquisition of first baseman Wilson Contreras has left Casas’ future in Boston in doubt, and the Brewers could provide an ideal opportunity for a fresh start, while also giving them a promising option at their uncertain first-base position.

As the Red Sox look to keep pace in the American League East, it will be interesting to see how aggressive they are in pairing Crochet with another established ace.
