It was a bit shocking after the Miami Marlins didn’t make a significant move at the trade deadline, specifically with a couple of starting pitchers in Sandy Alcantara and Edward Cabrera. Both were linked to multiple teams, including contenders, but nothing came to light and they finished out the year with the organization that took a chance on them.
However, the rumors didn’t stop there; instead carried over into the offseason. As time went on, reports started to surface on Alcantara staying with the Marlins. The organization continues to have faith in the Cy Young winner, especially after elevating his performance after the All-Star break, recording 83.2 innings pitched, 67 hits allowed, 33 runs allowed, 10 home runs allowed, 71 strikeouts, with an ERA of 3.33, 7-3 win-loss record, playing in 13 games.
It was a marvelous resurgence from the two-time All-Star, who underwent Tommy John surgery and missed the entire 2024 season. However, that safety didn’t translate over to starting right-handed pitcher Edward Cabrera.
The 27-year-old is coming off an outstanding season, playing in 26 games, 137.2 innings pitched, 150 strikeouts, 121 hits allowed, 60 runs allowed, 17 home runs allowed, with an ERA of 3.53, a WAR of 2.8, and recorded an 8-7 win-loss record. It was the first time the Dominican Republic native was able to display his talents without injuries derailing his trajectory.
It was also an opportunity for the Marlins to sell high on a well-respected starting pitcher with an injury history. Regardless, other organizations were attracted to Cabrera’s potential, especially after the season he just had. There were teams still interested, most notably the New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs. Both would need to provide a significant package to acquire Cabrera.Â
It’s recently been reported that the Cubs are “close” to finalizing a trade for the right-handed pitcher. Both sides are still working on the final details, but it has been added that Owen Caissie will be involved in the package. He appeared in 12 games last season, 26 at-bats, five hits, four runs batted in, and one home run.
The Yankess were “never close” to getting a deal done.
There will be more to come on the news, but Cabrera’s five-year tenure with the Marlins is over.
