Steve Kerr’s outburst and subsequent ejection in the Warriors’ 103-102 loss to the LA Clippers on Monday night was so upsetting that he didn’t want to address the media after the game.
But Kerr’s ejection was even more troubling to his mom, Ann, who was in attendance at Intuit Dome.
Before the Warriors’ game against the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday at Chase Center, ESPN’s Anthony Slater asked Kerr about his ejection.
The Warriors’ coach, speaking to the media for the first time since the incident, didn’t take the bait, but he did reveal that his mom didn’t like what she saw from her son.
“I know you have to try, but there’s a reason [assistant] Terry [Stotts] did media the other night,” Kerr told Slater and other reporters. “I was upset about a couple of calls, but all good other than my mom being terribly disappointed in me. She was at the game and she looked horrified afterwards.
“She asked me if I was going to hit the referee. I said ‘Mom, I’ve never hit anybody in my life.’ She said ‘It looked like you were going to hit him,’ and she said ‘Why were all those men holding you back?’ And I said ‘Well, that’s all part of the theatrics of it.’ She didn’t understand. I was a little alarmed that she thought I was going to hit somebody. That scared me a little bit.”
Kerr was ejected after arguing a missed goaltending call against the Clippers. He was justifiably irate and let the officiating crew hear it, quickly picking up two technical fouls with just under eight minutes remaining in regulation.
Following the loss, Stotts went to the podium instead of Kerr and acknowledged that he was there to save his boss from a potential fine.
A little later in the night, the NBA released a pool report in which crew chief Brian Forte admitted the referees made the wrong call on the court and that goaltending on Clippers forward John Collins should have been called.
Luckily for Steve, Ann and the Warriors, Kerr didn’t hit any of the referees and he avoided a postgame fine by not addressing the media.
