He said the most important part is being honest about how players help the team over a long season. With Bo Bichette, the talk has been about moving him from shortstop to second base. Toronto already has shortstop Andrés Giménez, so if Bichette returns, he may play second to help the roster balance. Matheson asked a simple question: “How much of an upgrade is Bichette at second base compared to someone like Ernie Clement over a full season?” He pointed out that Clement had a good run in the postseason, but a whole year is a different challenge. This shows the club is thinking about long-term performance, not just short bursts. Then he talked about Kyle Tucker, the four-time All-Star outfielder still unsigned at the start of January. Matheson said it did not matter who Tucker would take reps from, because his bat and glove are that valuable.
