The New York Mets roster retool continues as David Stearns puts his stamp on the organization. After losing Edwin Diaz and Pete Alonso, many Mets fans thought the organization would try to retain players who have some familiarity with the organization.
That sentiment proved to be wrong again Thursday evening when the Pittsburgh Pirates reportedly agreed to a deal with reliever Chris Devenski.

“Free-agent RH reliever Chris Devenski in agreement with Pirates on minor-league contract, source tells @TheAthletic,” insider Ken Rosenthal posted on X.
The exact details of Devenski’s contract are unknown, but losing him may end up hurting the Mets. While much of the issue with last season centered around a lack of starting pitching options, the bullpen certainly didn’t hold up well either aside from Diaz.
Devenski appeared in just 13 games for the Mets last season as he spent most of it in Triple-A Syracuse. However, he made the most of his time in Queens as he posted a 2.16 ERA with 14 strikeouts and five walks in 16 2/3 innings. The veteran right hander only spent one season in the Mets organization.
The 2017 World Series champion with the Houston Astros has been on his fair share of teams over the course of his career. He stuck around with the Astros through 2020 before bouncing between Arizona, Philadelphia, the Los Angeles Angels, Tampa Bay Rays and New York Mets before reportedly agreeing to a deal with the Pirates.
Pittsburgh’s bullpen continues to take shape ahead of spring training as Devenski should have a very realistic chance of making the opening day roster.
