BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Red Sox rookies taught the basics of baseball to some young Bostonians on Monday.
The Red Sox hosted their Play Ball Clinic at the BCYF Tobin Center, WBZ NewsRadio’s Jared Brosnan spoke with the executive director of the Red Sox Foundation, Beckah Salwasser.
Salwasser said this is their “way of spreading the joy and love of baseball across New England.”
She said it was an extra special day, since they had some of their rookies joining them to help teach the youngsters.
Included in the rookies was infielder Mikey Romero, who had his hands full at his station.
“I’m making sure that they’re paying attention cause some of these kids are hitting it pretty hard, it’s good they’re having fun,” Romero said.
He said he was having fun too and appreciated the chance to interact with the community.
“Our fanbase is what drives us to win games and to want to compete and want to win the World Series, so it’s cool to be with the community and give back like this,” Romero said.
Salwasser said events like this one are important for kids to have available to them.
“Too often, P.E. classes, outdoor recesses, they’re being limited and just cut in schools and so more than ever it’s so important that we get kids to be physically active,” Salwasser said.
Romero said he enjoyed doing this event, “I remember I was once in their shoes, and it’s just cool to see that they’re in the beginning stages of learning like how to play the game, it’s pretty cool and I enjoy just giving back and seeing them smile and have fun.”
Throughout the year, these Play Ball Clinics will give roughly 3,000 kids across New England a fun way to exercise and learn about baseball.
